Our response to the DLUHC consultation on sprinklers in care homes, removal of national classifications, and staircases in residential buildings

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has proposed several new updates to Approved Document B, including recommendations to mandate sprinklers in care homes and second staircases for new tower blocks over 30m in height.

While we agree that the proposals for a second staircase threshold and for sprinklers in care homes will have benefits for disabled and elderly residents who require support to evacuate, there must be equal opportunity for evacuation for residents in existing buildings without a second staircase and in lower-rise residential buildings below the height threshold for both a second staircase and sprinklers.
