Are shared owners in London being left behind?

On 19 December 2023, Secretary of State Michael Gove wrote to all registered providers (e.g. housing associations) to let them know about changes the Government has made to relax rules on subletting and funding available for buybacks of shared ownership properties. He also asked registered providers to publish their policies online.

Life after the building safety crisis: Laura’s story

The first thing to say is that, in a variety of ways, we are lucky compared to many others who are caught up in the building safety crisis. We have now managed to sell our flat and were fortunate enough to be able to buy somewhere new. Our flat wasn’t dangerous, and we never felt unsafe living there. We never needed nor had to pay for remediation work, or a waking watch. We weren’t bankrupted.

Developer update: Fairview, Avant, Vistry, Crest Nicholson and Lendlease

At the time of writing, 55 developers have signed the developer remediation contract and over the last few months, we have asked several participant developers to meet with us to discuss the progress of their remediation programme. As Michael Gove noted in his recent tweet, we are engaging with the Secretary of State and his Department to share feedback about companies that are delaying making homes safe and any significant concerns for leaseholders and residents.

Our Meeting with Telford Homes – January 2024

On 25th January, we met with Telford Homes to discuss the company’s building safety remediation programme. The London-centric developer has 148 relevant buildings (over 11 metres in height) and around 15,000 homes in its portfolio, ranking it as the 7th largest to sign the Government’s developer contract in terms of the volume of buildings in scope.

Our written evidence to the Commons LUHC committee inquiry into shared ownership

In July 2023 the Commons Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee initiated an inquiry into shared ownership to examine the challenges associated with the scheme, including barriers to achieving full home ownership and whether shared ownership is genuinely an affordable route to owning a home.

Our Meeting with Galliard Homes – December 2023

On 13th December, we met with Galliard Homes to discuss the company’s building safety remediation programme. Galliard is the largest privately-owned residential developer in London and describes itself as a “mid-sized, family-run company.” In terms of the total number of relevant buildings (over 11 metres in height) in scope of the Developer Remediation Contract, it is the 11th largest company in the scheme.

We spoke with Gary Conway, Executive Director and Chief Marketing Officer; Lauren Taylor, Head of Litigation & Building Safety; Sukie Dhillon, Technical Manager; and Julian Harper-Brown, Director of the Group’s in-house managing agent, PMM Limited.

Our Meeting with Redrow – December 2023

After recently attending Redrow’s 2023 AGM, we arranged a follow-up meeting on 5th December to discuss the company’s building safety remediation programme in more depth. We met with Tim Stone, Regional Chief Executive with accountability for building safety, and Richard Keogh, Special Projects Director with day-to-day responsibility for the remediation programme.
