Our response to the King’s Speech

In the King’s Speech today the Government announced that draft legislation will be published on leasehold and commonhold reform. We welcome the leasehold reforms and we congratulate all those who have campaigned so passionately for years to ensure there is an end to this feudal tenure.

It is great to see plans to remove the draconian threat of forfeiture used by freeholders oppressively to enforce lease agreements. However, the Bill is currently only in draft form, and we need certainty on when the final Bill will be introduced to Parliament.

We are very disappointed to see no mention of the building safety crisis in the King’s speech and not even an inkling of what Labour’s plans are to meet their manifesto commitments on accelerating the pace of remediation, putting a renewed focus on ensuring all those responsible for the crisis pay to put it right, and how leaseholders will be better protected.

We are comforted to an extent that MHCLG has told us today that the manifesto commitments on building safety are being worked on swiftly to make the plans a reality. After seven years of an unrelenting crisis that has blighted the lives of hundreds of thousands of ordinary people across the nation, and the previous Government’s failure to produce a fair and long-lasting solution that protects all innocent leaseholders at meaningful pace, we need to see urgent action and not more warm words that lead nowhere.

The End Our Cladding Scandal campaign calls on the Government to lead an urgent, national effort to fix the building safety crisis.
